A fantastic instrument with a big, open voice. The tone sits in the wider, more projecting end of the Rudall and Rose tradition, approaching the power and breadth of a Pratten-style bore while retaining the nuanced, layered tonal palette that Rudall and Rose-derived flutes are known for. Dynamic range is exceptional, with real headroom at the loud end of the spectrum and no sacrifice of color or control at lower volumes. The low D speaks with particular authority, strong and centered.

The flute features an adjustable cork and tuning slide, with keys and rings in sterling silver. The body is African Blackwood. Workmanship throughout is meticulous and detailed. Made in 2025 and played very little, the instrument is in essentially new condition.

Supplied with custom wooden box made by Pip. (not photographed).

About the Maker

Pip Grinter is a second-generation maker producing small-batch, handcrafted traditional Irish wooden flutes. The Grinter Workshop was founded over 35 years ago by Michael Grinter and Helen McGeachin, and during that time it developed into one of the world's highest-profile flute-making workshops. Pip's flutes are based on the Rudall and Rose design, and are available in a variety of keywork configurations, including keyless, six-keyed, and eight-keyed (fully keyed). The larger-holed model represented here follows directly in the tradition established by Michael Grinter, whose instruments were widely played at the highest levels of Irish traditional music.
